SSL Certificate Checker
The RootUtils SSL Checker is a comprehensive diagnostic tool that connects to your web server, retrieves the SSL/TLS certificate, and analyzes its status. It helps you verify that your website is secure, trusted by browsers, and not expired.
Why is SSL important?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), now technically TLS (Transport Layer Security), encrypts the connection between a user's browser and your website. It is crucial for:
- Security: Protects passwords and credit card numbers from hackers.
- Trust: Displays the padlock icon in the browser address bar.
- SEO: Google explicitly uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. Unsecured sites are penalized.
What does this tool check?
- Expiration Date: Alerts you if your certificate is about to expire (or already has).
- Issuer Chain: Verifies who signed the certificate (e.g., Let's Encrypt, DigiCert, Cloudflare).
- Host Match: Ensures the certificate actually belongs to the domain you are checking.
- Bit Strength: Checks if the encryption key (e.g., 2048-bit RSA) is strong enough.
Common SSL Errors
- Expired Certificate: The most common issue. Simply renew the cert with your hosting provider.
- Self-Signed Certificate: The certificate was created by you, not a trusted authority. Browsers will show a scary "Not Secure" warning.
- Mixed Content: When an HTTPS site loads images or scripts over HTTP. This breaks the green padlock.
