Origins of Lorem Ipsum

Lorem Ipsum is not random gibberish. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old.

The Source

It comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero. It is a treatise on the theory of ethics.

The Meaning

The standard passage starts with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", which is a cut-off version of "Dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet" (Translation: "Pain itself, because it is pain...").

It is a long-established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English.
